Paintings of Italy, India and Ikaria by Patrick Cullen NEAC.
Over the past two years, as well as travelling to India, Patrick has returned to Tuscany where throughout the 1990s he used to regularly go, producing a series of solo exhibitions in London galleries. Revisiting this region of Italy has been inspiring.
He writes: “Landscape painting has always been at the root of my work. The contours of the earth, the changing seasons and all the alterations effected by weather and sunlight form the basis for each painting. Even in an urban setting, atmosphere and light are what intrigue me. Rediscovering the beauty of the Tuscan countryside with its cultivated hillsides richly patterned and terraced by vineyards and olive groves has been like returning to home base but with a new perspective. The colours of India have broadened and to an extent intensified my palette.”
Ken Howard RA OBE writes: “Patrick Cullen’s work speaks directly to us, celebrating, revealing and communicating his love of light and nature. He has the impressionists’ ability to fix the mood of a moment, but his work also has that quality essential to all great art, the balance between form and content.”
