Artist Statement

Trained at The Royal Academy of Arts in London, Charlotte Sorapure’s paintings often hint at an underlying narrative, yet her work is still grounded in drawing and observation. What appears to be spontaneous is usually the outcome of careful consideration.

Her paintings begin with compositional ideas and preparatory studies, looking at the placement and relationship of intervals, shapes and rhythms but always with the aim of infusing a work with atmosphere, a sense of mystery and the unexpected.

Method of Working

The paintings always begin with an idea that has its basis in drawing and composition. Whether the subject is imagined or observed, Charlotte will usually make preparatory compositional studies, looking at the placement and relationship of intervals, shapes and rhythms.  Even what appears to be spontaneous or unexpected is usually the outcome of careful consideration.
