New English Art Club Annual Lecture

'Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious: An Artistic Friendship' by James Russell - acclaimed author, curator and art historian - a free lecture thanks to the sponsorship of Panter and Hall

They say that opposites attract, and this was certainly true in the case of Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden, the former fun-loving and gregarious, the latter painfully shy.

Yet they shared not only a deliciously waspish sense of humour, but also an admiration for artists of the past and a determination to make their mark, and when they met on their first day at the Royal College of Art in 1922 they became firm friends.

Over the next twenty years both were celebrated for their work in design and illustration, and as fine artists. Inspired by Paul Nash, they both took up watercolour as their medium of choice and together reinvented it for the modern age.

This colourful, informative lecture gives a rare opportunity to see the work of two remarkable British artists side by side.

Lecturer James Russell has curated exhibitions at Dulwich Picture Gallery devoted to Ravilious (2015) and Bawden (2018), and has written books on both artists. The Lost Watercolours of Edward Bawden was a Sunday Times Book of the Year.

The lecture will take place against the backdrop of this year’s Annual Exhibition by the New English Art Club at Mall Galleries, where you will discover over 350 new paintings, drawings, and prints by many of the country’s finest artists today, including Richard Bawden, son of Edward.
