THE HEATHERLEY SCHOOL OF FINE ART, LONDON
In this one-day workshop you will be given a comprehensive introduction to creating watercolour paintings.
You will learn how to use materials (paper, paints and brushes), and different techniques (washes, colour mixing, tone, texture & pattern) through carefully designed exercises. You will then have the opportunity to apply these techniques to create still lifes and landscapes (urban and rural), painting skies, foliage and perspective.
The course is structured in a flexible manner and can accommodate all skill levels from beginners to advanced students. There will be technical exercises, which will allow you to develop your skills with relevant supportive learning material.
You will be working at your own level and there will be time to improve your skills and develop your own ideas. There will be plenty of one-to-one feedback throughout the lessons and you will be given feedback on your progress and advise with a group plenary session at the end of the day's workshop.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Apply different washes use a broad tonal range
- Develop your understanding of composition
- Use a range of colours
- Understand colour mixing
- Plan and execute your own watercolour
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Neil Pittaway was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1973. He studied at Cheltenham School of Art from 1993-96, the University of Bradford from 1996-1998, the Royal Academy Schools, London, 1998-2001 and the University of Huddersfield, 2003-04. Neil is a Member of the New English Art Club, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Associate Member of the Alpine Club, London, and an exhibiting Member of Leeds Fine Artists. His work is in public collections including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Bankside Gallery, RWS & RE Collection, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; St. Paul’s Cathedral Library, London; Guild Hall Art Library, London; The Arts Club, Dover Street, London; the D.H. Lawrence Museum and Birthplace, Nottingham; the Indian Institute of Contemporary Art, Mumbai, India; and H.M. The Queen, the Royal Collection Trust and The Collection of Heritage Malta. In Neil’s work travel, discovery, the Enlightenment, Gothic revival, satire and historical heritage, are used to create a labyrinth of visual histories.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring your own painting materials, try to include as much of the following as you can:
- Drawing pencils, eraser and pencil sharpener, masking tape
- Watercolour paper - individual sheets any size and or / sketch pad A2 or smaller
- Paint brushes - various sizes including one broad wash brush
- One or more still life objects [this can be anything]
- Colour pictures of landscapes - including sky’s, sunsets clouds, and reflections
- Any previous sketchbook and / or completed work
- water jar and roll of paper towels
There is a basic materials shop on site if required. There are tea and coffee making facilities on site and cafes nearby - but you might want to bring a packed lunch.
