Straws of Sickert: a Lecture by Michael Ajerman: Mall Galleries, 1 pm (Doors Open 12:50 pm)

Walter Sickert is an artist whose work is a bridge between English and French painting in the rapidly changing world of the late 1800s leading well into the 20th century.

Drawing from the wellsprings of his mentors James Whistler and Edgar Degas in his formative years, Sickert's work is a constant tension between fast and slow.  As a young man who worked in the theater, his painting never lost the notion of theatricality. Nor his life. Straws of Sickert will shine a light on his formative years, the Camden Town Nudes series, and his unique late work derived from photographic sources.

Walter Sickert was one of earliest members of the New English Art Club, elected in 1888, making him a perfect subject for our 140th anniversary celebration day. More details below.

ABOUT THE Lecturer  

Michael Ajerman is a practicing painter born in New York. As a teenager he took part in the Cooper Union Outreach Program, afterwards studying at the Corcoran School of Art, the New York Studio School and the Yale Summer School at Norfolk. Later completed his master's degree at the Slade School of Art and receiving the British Institute Award from the Royal Academy the same year. In 2018 he was awarded UCLA’s Kitaj Research Fellowship.

He has consistently exhibited internationally in solo and group shows, most recently in Milan and New York.  Currently he is showing in the East Wing Collection 16 at the Courtauld Institute’s University.  His writing has recently been included in the monograph The Uglow Papers. He also writes for the Garageland Magazine.

Since 2020 he has been lecturing about painting visionaries like Paula Modersohn Becker, Maria Lassnig, RB Kitaj, and Philip Guston.  These talks have been presented at such institutions as the Camberwell School of Art, New York Studio School, Ruskin School at Oxford University, Courtauld Institute, and Heatherley’s School of Art.
