The World Comes to Pay a Visit: 1-day plein air workshop with Paul Newland: Kings Cross, London
Whether painting or drawing, the aim is to describe what’s going on in this vibrant area of central London: people, architecture, and spaces.
Use whatever medium you choose to study the contrasts to be seen in this vibrant area of central London. There's the Euston Road, the railway station (new superimposed on Victorian structure), the constant movements of people amongst surrounding developments and restorations. Just a few hundred yards away, the Regent's Canal with its multifarious uses.
In this one-day workshop, tutor Paul Newland will help students to make studies which expand their awareness and show what they have seen in this place of contrasts and activity.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Paul Newland makes paintings which essentially combine memory with imagination and observation. His works often evolve over a long period of time in an on-off sort of way. More recently he has begun to paint outside in oil paint where chance and accident have become part of his working process. Paul is also a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and has exhibited widely. He has won many awards, including The Discerning Eye Purchase Prize in 2014 and The Discerning Eye Founders Purchase Prize in 2024.
WHAT TO BRING
- Drawing board, A3 is probably ideal (but larger or smaller if you prefer) and clips/masking tape
- Paper - robust if possible
- Pencils, pastels, maybe pens if you like to use those
- If painting - a selection of watercolours (box or tubes), or gouache; brushes; water container; palette of some kind

A light sketching easel/stool would be useful
- Please dress appropriately and come prepared for any weather conditions
