Drawing from Paintings at Tate Britain: half-day workshop with Laura Smith: Tate Britain, London
London’s Tate Britain Gallery is home to an extraordinary collection of paintings, spanning 500 years, including masterpieces by the Pre-Raphaelites, JMW Turner, David Hockney, Bridget Riley and many more.
Join Laura Smith for an afternoon of drawing and looking at paintings. Laura is passionate about drawing from great works of art. She believes that it slows down our looking and allows us to see more deeply into the mind of the artist. London’s Tate Britain Gallery is home to an extraordinary collection of paintings, spanning 500 years, including masterpieces by the Pre-Raphaelites, JMW Turner, David Hockney, Bridget Riley and many more.
Laura will draw alongside students, sharing her approach to the activity. The day will begin with a short introduction to the collection and suggestions for drawing subjects. Students will then be encouraged to split off and draw from whichever painting most appeals to them for the first part of the session. Students will then gather together and, after looking at each other’s drawings, will spend time walking through the gallery, looking at the paintings drawn earlier on and sharing thoughts and ideas. Students will be encouraged to seek out works that speak to them and respond in their own, unique way.
All levels of experience are welcome.
