Artist Statement
Jonathan’s two interests in painting are colour, and exploring the built landscape of his adoptive home city of Leeds. For the last five years, almost all of his paintings have been of places within a 30-minute walk of his home, in the suburbs north-west of the city. His paintings are an attempt at recreating in paint the sensation, feeling and memory of a particular place, and colour is the main vehicle for this.
Method of Working
"I walk and take photographs each day - at home, I crop the photos, and print them in black-and-white, before developing the colour and composition using watercolour on paper. From the drawings I make paintings in oil or acrylic on canvas or board. The colour in a series of work comes partly from the original subject and my feelings about it, and memories of it, but it is also developed independently in the studio."
