Katherine Jackson NEAC values observational painting as an intimate means of giving attention to her surroundings and hopes to produce images which recreate the quiet absorption she experiences while making.

Artist Statement

‘My work comes out of careful attention to my surroundings. I particularly seek to describe the way light animates forms, and aim towards a pared-back clarity of composition; I’m interested in how these concerns might bring weight and presence to my subjects.’

Method of Working

‘I live and work in the Somerset countryside, near the Quantock Hills. I tend to work on several paintings at once, and I select a particular one to develop according to the time of day, the light and weather. My paintings are made in oils, and occasionally in watercolour.

I almost always work from life - my monotypes are usually made out in the landscape and printed in my studio, and my paintings are done at home or in the surrounding fields. I enjoy the way in which a painting can emerge directly out of an encounter with a subject.’
