Drawing from the Rodin Sculpture Collection: half-day workshop with Louise Balaam: Victoria & Albert Museum, London

22 November 2026
Overview
PRICE: £40 (Concessions available) Victoria & Albert Museum, London: 14:00 – 17:00

This workshop provides a relaxed but focused environment in which to discover some of the beautiful pieces of Rodin sculpture, in a range of media, within the V&A.

Rodin was a largely self-taught artist, deeply inspired by tradition (particularly Michelangelo) and yet was also a trailblazer for modern sculpture. His work aims to express emotional states in a way which was new and radical - part of this was his refusal to smooth over the marks of his process in the finished work.  The V&A has a wonderful collection of his work, including monumental standing figures in bronze, portrait heads, work in marble and plaster maquettes. Spending time looking at and drawing these amazing pieces gives us the chance to deepen our appreciation of Rodin’s work and of sculptural form generally.

After a short introductory discussion, students will be invited to choose one or more sculptures to work from, with one-to-one tuition from Louise as required. At the end of the afternoon there will be a short, informal plenary session to look at everyone’s work.

All levels of experience are welcome.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Louise Balaam is an abstract landscape artist who lives and works in Kent. Her work is heavily inspired by an emotional response to the natural world. Her process is to draw outside, soaking up the experience of being in the environment, and then take that inspiration back to the studio to paint, aiming for a direct and intuitive response to the experience of being in the landscape.
