Constructing a Narrative Space: half-day workshop with Johanna Zhang: The National Gallery, London
Join Johanna Zhang for exploration of techniques used to construct narrative space in the National Gallery collection.
The workshop begins with an examination of a selection of paintings in the National Gallery, focusing on the techniques used to construct narrative space. Following the analysis, participants will work directly in the galleries to produce a series of compositional studies of their own choosing. The session concludes with a collaborative review of the drawings.
All levels of experience are welcome.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Johanna’s painting reimagines narrative space through multi-figural compositions based on drawings from observation and memory. Her teaching encourages students to move beyond depiction towards a deliberate construction of pictorial space.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring a sketchbook and pencils or fine liner pens. Unfortunately, dusty or wet materials, such as charcoal, pastels or watercolours are not allowed.
