On this two-day course we will explore the fundamentals of painting the visible world, working from carefully choreographed still life set-ups rich in colour.
Alex teaches a very direct approach which helps us to analyse and react to what we see with a painter’s eye. He attempts to demystify the experience, and show how by looking at the world as a Jigsaw Puzzle of colour shapes we can make sense of it and depict it in paint whilst exploring the descriptive and expressive possibilities of mark-making.
The still life set-ups will encourage us to shift our focus away from an inventory list of objects to a more abstract reading of shapes and their colours and how they relate to one another. Perhaps surprisingly, this shift in thinking allows us to paint what we see more truthfully: nouns no longer get in the way.
We will discover how by adjusting and tuning the relationships of each colour shape and its texture and edge we can convey form, colour and the fall of light, shadows, surface texture, reflections etc., all by paying attention to colours shapes in relationship.
Painting from life, whatever the subject, can be a daunting prospect. Alex’s approach makes it manageable for all levels of painter and opens our eyes to the wonders of colour and mark making as tools for painting the visible world.
