Artist's Statement

Although his subject matter is varied, Jason’s main area of interest has been the still life, either concentrating on the subject closely or expanding out to take in the surrounding interior. The arrangements vary in their complexity of composition whether it's a single lemon perched quietly on a plinth, or if it's a mass of objects sprawled out on the studio floor. Whatever is being expressed however, whether it’s a scene of serenity or utter chaos, the object and arrangement is always carefully examined with a particular focus on the relationship and tension between forms so that every component is integral to the other and to the whole.

Method of Working

Jason works directly from observation with drawing being fundamental to his practice. Whether it’s working with charcoal or oil paint, the process remains the same; one of adding and taking away, scraping back and reapplying. Adjustments to both the arrangement and the painting continue endlessly until some kind of balance and harmony are achieved.
