ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"I trained at the Academy of Arts in Riga, before moving to Britain in the early 1990s. Having the opportunity to absorb and interpret many different traditions and influences has helped mould me into the artist I am today. I still continue to experiment and search for artistic language without being limited by any particular stylistic boundaries. The only thing that remains unchanged is my interest in changing reality and its connection with tradition. We live in a very curious time, not always joyful - and definitely challenging. In the current totalitarian technocratic situation I find it is especially important to preserve my human response, artistic skills and freedom."

WORKING METHOD

"My work can come about in many ways, more often hard than easy. But sometimes it’s just creative luck when a person sits in front of you and you can paint a portrait right away, without any preliminary sketches. Sometimes the work matures in my mind for a long time - even months - and then requires work on numerous drawings along with artistic courage to complete the subject."
