125 anniversary of the NEAC

The first exhibition of the New English in 1886 immediately established the NEAC as a strong voice. During the entire 20th Century, in spite of waves of movements that pulled the art world in many directions, the club’s artists held to their commitment to figurative art.

Auction Rules

For the sale of items in our online auctions, where these rules differ from our general Terms and Conditions, these rules take precedence.

  1. You may only bid if you have a valid account and are logged on. (You can create an account here, and log on here.)
  2. A valid account for auction bidding is one where you have provided a valid address and phone number.
    1. If you created your account before we launched our online auctions, you may need to add your address and phone number, as this information was not mandatory previously.
    2. If you have bought items from the website before, then we will already hold your address and phone number. It is your responsibility to ensure these are up-to-date before bidding.
    3. We reserve the right to revoke bids where the contact information provided does not appear genuine, and we are not able to contact the account holder by phone to verify their information.
  3. Bids may only be placed online. No telephone, postal or verbal bids of any kind will be accepted.
  4. Each auction will offer for sale one or more items.
  5. There will be a preview period prior to each auction, during which items to be auctioned can be viewed online. At this stage, the start date and time of the auction will be clearly shown. No bids can be placed during the preview.
  6. Once the auction has started, bids can be placed if you are logged on with a valid account. The end date and time of the auction will be clearly shown.
  7. Even if there are several items in the auction, the end date and time will be the same for all items.
  8. Each item offered in an auction will have a starting price, a reserve price, and an incremental bid value. Each bid placed is a maximum bid, but the item can be won by an amount equal to the second highest maximum bid plus the incremental bid value.
    1. The starting price and the reserve price may be the same.
    2. If no bids have been made, this will be clearly shown for each item.
    3. If the reserve price has not been met, then this will be clearly shown for each item. An item that does not reach its reserve price will not be sold.
    4. If the reserve price has been met, then this will be clearly shown for each item. An item that reaches or exceeds the reserve price will be sold to the highest bidder.
    5. Bids may only increase by multiples of the incremental bid value set for each item.
    6. The bid you enter is your maximum bid, the maximum amount you are prepared to pay for the item. However, the current bid is normally one incremental jump above the second highest maximum bid. The one exception is if yours is the first maximum bid to exceed the reserve price. In this case the current bid will be set to the reserve price.
    7. If you are logged on, it will be clearly shown if yours is currently the highest bid.
    8. The system will automatically increase your bid by the incremental bid value if yours is the winning current bid and you are then outbid, provided that your maximum bid exceeds the new second highest maximum bid.
  9. The auction will end on the date and at the time shown.
  10. Each winning bidder must pay for the item(s) they have won within 3 working days by logging on and using the websites checkout system in the normal way. Detailed instructions will be emailed to the winner after the auction close.
  11. Delivery costs to the UK mainland are currently FREE, but buyers outside the UK will have to pay an additional amount for delivery. This will be calculated at the checkout. If you are bidding from outside the UK and want an estimate of delivery costs, please email . Do not bid if you are not prepared to pay this additional cost.
  12. No item will be shipped until we have received cleared funds. The website offers secure payment by debit and credit card via the Barclays ePDQ payment gateway. Payment can also be made by cheque by following the instructions given during the check-out process.
  13. All other conditions of the sale will be as stated in the Terms and Conditions of the NEAC Trading Company.
  14. Artists reserve the right, in exceptional circumstances, to withdraw their work from an auction before it ends, in which case all bidders will be informed by email.
  15. The NEAC Trading Company reserves the right to refuse any bid or registration.
  16. If you need help or advice with the auction or these rules, please email .
