The first exhibition of the New English in 1886 immediately
established the NEAC as a strong voice. During the entire
20th Century, in spite of waves of movements that pulled
the art world in many directions, the club’s artists held to
their commitment to figurative art.
I think the work speaks for itself. I paint directly from things, and also from drawings, studies. Often I am trying to combine recollection and imagination, with observation, in a single picture. The result I hope for is, I suppose, a kind of fantasia, as in some old pictures in which different sites or times are combined.
I fell in love with the medium of watercolour when I stayed in Rome for a year, 1975 - 6. It was so useful for recording changing light on architecture. Later, I was inspired by music clubs and street scenes in London; later still by interiors and cityscapes. I always tried to use the medium directly and simply, exploiting washes. Now, it seldom works out that way. With oils, the process becomes more complicated and longer.
