The first exhibition of the New English in 1886 immediately
established the NEAC as a strong voice. During the entire
20th Century, in spite of waves of movements that pulled
the art world in many directions, the club’s artists held to
their commitment to figurative art.
Jane Corsellis studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. She was awarded the Leverhulme Scholarship and the final year Painting Prize. While still a student she exhibited at the Young Contemporaries Exhibition and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
After leaving the Byam Shaw in 1962 she painted for a year in Spain before returning to teach for two years. In 1972 she moved with her family to Hong Kong where she had a solo exhibition. Having returned to England for a few years, she then moved to Ottawa, Canada for three years , having a solo exhibition there. Subsequently she lived for a further three years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; while there she visited and painted in India, Thailand, Bali and Australia and had a solo exhibition in Kuala Lumpur In 1991 she returned with her family to their house in Notting Hill, London, also spending part of the year in Pembrokeshire where she has had a house and a studio since she was a child. She has makes frequent painting trips to France, Italy and Austria. She now lives overlooking the River Thames at Strand on The Green in Chiswick.
Starting in 1985, she had a series of very successful solo exhibitions at the New Academy Gallery in London, the last being in November 2004. In 1998 she had a solo exhibition at the Hollis Taggart Gallery in New York. In November 2006 she had her first one person show at Messum’s Gallery in Cork Street, London, a second show took place in November 2008 and further show of watercolours in March 2010. She exhibits regularly at exhibitions of the New English Art Club, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Small Paintings Group and from time to time in other galleries and exhibitions. She held a joint exhibition with Peter Brown NEAC at the Albany Gallery in Cardiff in April 2010 and this was repeated in August 2012.
She has produced a number of lithographs with the Curwen Studio. Her book ‘Painting Figures in Light’ was published in the United States by Watson and Guptill in 1982 and then in the UK. Her second book ‘A Personal View Painting in Oils and Watercolour’ was published by David and Charles in October 2000. At the same time APV Films brought out a film of Jane at work called ‘Landscapes in Oils’. A second film called ‘Coastal Watercolours’ was released by APV Films in November 2004.
Her work is in many corporate and private collections in the UK, North America, Europe and the Far East.
She is a teaching member of the NEAC Drawing School.
Her latest solo exhibition took place in June 2012 at Messum’s in London. It consisted mainly of new works painted on the Atlantic coast in France and on the Thames at Strand on The Green where she now lives.
